Tumelo, the only authentication seems to be possession of the SIM card.

Since all the your data traffic is identified and charged via the IMSI number in your SIM, someone would have to steal your SIM to use you data package.

The upside is you can use the same config settings for MTN and Vodacom E220 modems.

I had a struggle with a Huawei E220 in Hardy Heron, to connect to three.co.uk network. I found the handiest way was to install Gnome-PPP, a graphical interface. A benefit of that is that you can dock it in the panel and view the connection log.

Thanks count. ok, I knew the password was blank but the username is kind of wierd, wouldn that leave a hole for intrusions and such? I mean surely there has to be some sort of authentication mechanism

The username and password are not linked to the sim card, so you can put anything you like in those fields.

The SIM cards that MTN supply with the E220 do not have a PIN by default, which is why your configuration worked.
