Nigel.

The channels might be there but I would be surprised if SABC has anything that resembles a budget to populate those channels with content. Seeing that we are mostly watching re-runs day in and day out here in SA.

Please can anyone tell if my DTT decoder from England can be upgraded to SA standards, has there are now 7 channel available, as seen on the EPG/Turning, but no pictures yet. The channels are: SABC Movies, SABC Entertainment, SABC News International, SABC Knowledge, SABC Tots, SABC Sport, SABC Jnr, plus other DSTV channels like SS1, SS3, SS5, blitz, CNN, etc

Props to SA for choosing the H.264 codec. A shame it's still compressed to artefacting (I hope it's not as eye-gougingly bad as DSTV), but at least they chose a modern codec.

Here in Australia, I have a bargain basement "Soniq" HD digital tuner and a 1920x1200 24" Dell display with literally every video port available. It's very nice getting a widescreen 1080i signal on a capable display, I'll say that much. There's still artefacting on certain programming, but when it's good, oh boy, is it ever good. Not Blu-ray good, but beats the stuffing out of standard definition.

I read somewhere that the US is going over to full digital cover in Feb 09. They will apparently now have the problem where all "Analogue" set will be rendered useless, thus forcing the general public to acquire a converter.

After Feb 09 you will only see static if you haven't done this.

But they are reserving the Analogue Channels for state emergency broad casting. A few opinionists are now asking what happens when everybody converts to digital, how will this scenario benefit anyone in a case of emergency.

Back home we are still waiting for the "other" TV/satellite providers to actually set-up shop. They were bound to introduce their services mid June and here we are still waiting.

I am stuck wondering if this digital transfer is playing in on those plans.

Maybe, maybe not.

There is talk that SABC will encrypt their transmissions to squeeze additional license fees. Does anyone know if this is correct?
