Great article Toby, I've put some thought into this as well and the depth of privacy invasion is not surprising, what worries me is what we don't know. There has been rumors of an US Government organization getting their hands dirty with FaceBook data...

@willem. Fair enough - but now you understand why South African business is utterly terrified of social networking platforms. Until we can address these issues - and show business how to operate inside of them, don't expect the Social Media / Web 2.0 industry in this country to get the support of the corporates.

Rather sad - becuase that's where the real money lies...

Great info on the mining of data there Toby, but I could not really care less. I use the social network sites to stay connected with my friends. Let them mine the data, and SPAM me if they want, cause I use GMAIL, so I never see the SPAM, and they pay money for 0% success. I guess I let the war happen out there, and only enjoy the perks..

One thing I have learned in so far about the net is this. If you give a little, you get a little. For me, it's worth the risk. I guess a good rule of thunmb is to try and keep REAL confidential information analog (Bank PIN numbers and the like)

Maybe one day, this whole SPAM thing will die, but in the meantime, I use the BIG guns to fight them, sit back and relax, and watch it like a movie. SPAMMER 0, GMAIL 1,805 742...
