[...] Grand Theft Morals, or ultimate role model? is a piece written for Tech Leader, the M&G’s new offering in the Thought Leader stable. In the article I highlight some of the learning outcomes associated with digital games. Then I hold up Grand Theft Auto IV against that light, and see if what we know about digital games-based learning still shines through. In case you don’t know, GTA IV is the most popular game of all time, and is also extremely violent. [...]

What makes a game that is age appropriate and enables people to exercise their shadow psyche 'bad'?

If you follow this argument to it's logical conclusion it means you should not watch Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" because it's bad, and never ever read Bret Easton Ellis because "American Psycho" is bad.

From a child's perspective we would then have to ban all fairy tales because they are inherently violent and bad. Filled with cannibal witches (Hansel & Gretel); murderous wolves (Little Red Riding Hood) and so on.

I think it is easy to jump on an emotional band wagon as feminists and Mothers Against Drunk Driving have done. For me I reckon the real challenge is contextualizing the violence. We live in a violent society and world, it is part of life. How can the game be used by people who love it to understand the nature of violence.

Interesting, thought provoking blog.

Hi Steve... thanks for the post. It's unfortunate that GTA IV is mostly known for the controversy over it's violent lawless storyline... because what actually sets it apart is its execellent graphics, gameplay and storyline, not to mention one of the best most flexible virtual worlds I'ver ever played...
