Hi Everyone, thanks for the comments.
@Shaun - exciting times indeed mate!
@BWB - thats the first time I've heard Nano tech and search engines in the same context - bizarro!
@Tristan - very good points. If ever there was an argument for usage data it is video/multimedia rankings. I've come to the conclusion however (after a lengthy debate with Craig "tech god" Raw) that Flash is still a way off being called search engine friendly. The thing is that content provides context and without that context, what will you rank for? Flash content is hard for SE's to get to and understand and IMHO thats going to improve pretty slowly. Also, search engines aside, flash sites as a stereotypical average don't always deliver the best user experience other than the eye candy.
In terms of a more visual/rich search UI, I think it will definately happen, but will also be inherently trackable...
@Lilou - to be honest, I've never read an SEO book in my life. However I can strongly recommend the online resources at both SEOBook and SEOMoz. Those guys know their stuff and are really good at packaging it for us to understand. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't suggest that you visit quirk.biz to browse our resources section and sign up for our newsletter :)

Very informative thoughts Rob, great post. One question I have would be the use of images/logo's/screenshots/photos as search results and an alternative to text.

One example would be listing images of the sites in the SERPs which could be expanded once clicked. The user could then scan the page for whatever it is they are looking for or close it down and browse through the other images. Less direct interaction would equal less user data to determine quality scores or rankings.

Google recently announced that it is learning to index all textual content within Flash SWF files. The next logical step is to index image and/or video content within Flash.

Do you foresee visual search making an impact in the next few years? And if so, What does this change from links-driven rankings to richmedia-data-driven rankings mean for website owners and online marketers? ;)

Great Post, I'm sure the day will come when Google will utilize Nano technology and have an actual program that measures user interaction live- shuffling search results to give the end user the ultimate on line expereince.

Hi Rob,

I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding user data. Already we are seeing it on a somewhat small scale with Google SERPS, where different results are being spewed out according to your Google Account you are currently logged in as.

Search trends are definitely being monitored, and the results of your queries will soon be reflected accordingly.

I think in the long term, Search Results will be like getting a fine tailored suit, with results for the same phrases varying wildly from one user to the next.

Exciting times for SEO!
