Hi Pete - even though I support open-source, I need to use proprietary software as well in order to stay objective.

Thank you for your feedback.

Hi Paul - I can assure you it is not the same as Windows XP, and it is not the same as quicklaunch.

You can "pin" apps to the taskbar yes (similiar to quicklaunch) but these pinned apps do not function in the same way as quicklaunch.

I would recommend you read this to see what changes are coming:

Both the features which you mention, apart from the eye candy, are available on XP, namely Quick Launch and group active applications together.

Minnaar: For one who "embraces open source" you're doing a good job of flogging uber-closed MS stuff to your readers - ??
"Overall I feel that Windows 7 will be a big success" he gushes - well, duh, Microsoft-Minnaar!

seems everyone is talking about how nice Microsoft's new creation is but in the limited time that I have used it ive found a couple of things bothering me. First, I cant get to enable the classic start menu ( I prefer it as it is quicker and one uses less clicks to open program and this is so in my case as ive a lot of programs installed on my PC. Second, the new way of grouping files and folders in tiny icons on the tool bar is really annoying. If you are working with more than one folder open you have to spend more clicks getting the work done and this gets worse when you have more folders open. I would have preffered the old sys of folders standing on thier own in the toolbar and being grouped when there is no more space on the toolbar. In fact you could even disable the the 'group similar programs together' function. many times ive founf myself hitting either the Windows Media Player button or the Internet Explorer button (I am a firefox fanatic).I know most people hate Vista but ive come to love the sidebar along with its widgets.I used a couple of benchmarking applications and honestly the difference between Windows 7 and Vista has been negligible.hope the full product will offer better perfomance than the beta

Even though it is much more reactive feel than previous versions, I would honestly not say it is a Mac copy.
The one area where it might "copy" a mac is in that it is much faster, easy to use. But that is not quite copying, but simply the traits of a decent modern OS, which recent versions of Windows unfortunately have not been.

Microsoft give the people exactly what they think they need.

That being said, I think Windows 7 is better than XP. I believe that Micrsoft should give a free copy of Windows 7 to every Vista victim.
