The lack of Internet and the many viruses are a constant problem......until i started using Linux Mint or Ubuntu.......what a savior.

Machines all now run consistently.

This is a very interesting blog to read and the way you narrate the events makes me as the reader to feel like I was there during the events.

What impresses me the most about the article as well is your understanding of the community culture, their values and how you have won their trust with ICT.

Last but not least as a former student who was under your guidance for my thesis I am humbled but also inspired to have associated myself with wonderful people like you during my university study. Needless to say that it is people like you that continue to inspire me to find out more out of life and find my passion in life. As I read through the blog, I could feel your passion for what you do.

In closure, what you are doing is truly inspiring and Keep it up as it is people like you that this country needs to go forward.

i remember lectures on research introduction by Prof Klopper, he used to emphasise for the researcher to gain understand of the community in which he/she researches about, and that emphasis has come clear in this blog, anyway, Mr Krauss, you are a close friend with Prof....

the stories narrated in this blog is not foreign to me, what is foreign is the attention given by kk (Mr Kirstin Krauss) in emphasizing the attention paid to understand the community. this is highly enlightening.

i am the product of the poor community, which in my view is still poor, but i have overlooked many realities that my community is undergoing especially when it comes to ICT and its usage.

one example that comes to mind is when i faxed an application form to my younger brother of 21 years. i used fax to email technology. when he got at the internet cafe', i gave my email password and username so that he opens the inbox and download the application form and then apply for the job. i trusted him, also because he uses the computer at home now and then. to my surprise, he did not know what to do. he buzzed, and i called. now, i realised that i had to take him step by step. so i started. go to programs, look for e and click it....i went on up to when he opened the inbox and finally printed the forms.

my mistakes/assumptions:(1) i assumed with the help of an employee of the cafe' he would get the help, but he did not. (2) using a computer without internet is very different from using a computer with internet. (3) also, when he told me that he did not see e, then i quickly told him to look for firefox, and yes that is what they were using.

this supports what kk has clearly noted out, and it requires out-of-the-box thinking to come with ways of bringing ICTs to poor communities.
