Those of you who use Safari might already know about the PornPrivate Browsing button. You simply click it and while the feature is on, you will leave no trace. No cookies, no temporary files and no awkward link history popping up when you type in URLs in the address bar while someone is watching over your shoulder!

Unfortunately, Firefox still doesn’t have such a feature built in, despite being on Version 3 already. Which means I normally resort to using Safari for my *cough* private *cough* browsing.

But don’t despair. A simple add-on called Stealther performs exactly the same trick!

Once installed, simply select Stealther from the Tools Menu (See picture below)

StealtherStart

Once you click on Stealther, you will see a tiny blue padlock icon in the bottom right of your Status bar.

StealtherStop

This indicates that Stealther is now preventing any form of browsing activity being recorded. Once you’re done, err, “doing research”, simply click on the blue padlock icon and you’re back to normal mode!

You can install Stealther from here!

You can also create multiple browser profiles and keep one for your “research” purposes. Then you get the benefits of browser history, bookmarks and the like, but no chance of anyone seeing that stuff in your “regular” browser.

You can even run multiple profiles at the same time if you start firefox with the “–no-remote” switch.

You mean you’re … actually human?! *gasp*

Plugins and buttons aside, I still prefer ctunnel.com. Because even if someone is potentially watching the URLs you access, they won’t see a thing. And it’s not as if you’re downloading personal or sensitive information on these … visits …

There’s also the Clear Private Data button. That’s what it’s for. Clearing cache, history, cookies etc. You can even set it to automatically clear out your filthy tracks upon exit. Awesome!

You do know that people in IT positions are usually able to pop in on your screen and just see what you’re doing? In both stealth (were the user doesn’t have a clue) & non-stealth (were the user is given the choice to accept ’support’) modes too.

Not that we do it for fun, we’re usually too busy; but it has come more than a few times to have so-and-so recorded for random intervals during a day, month, and for busy common-use computers for the entire time it’s deployed.

I’m impressed, all of these comments and even URL postings, and not one link to a pr0n site! Well done internet, you’ll break this habit yet!

I normally end up switching browser to watch my porn so that I can clear everything when I am done. This sounds good though!

Would this firefox add-on when it is in stealth mode prevent google desktop from remembering the sites I have been to?

I sometimes worry that ISPs keep track of that info as well.

whoa. i’m not going to show this article to my teenage stepson. i already have to be secret ninja to catch him from looking at pr0n. [i don’t actually care if he does, but his parents do, so i have to fake it…]

but eish. i think that may have been created by someone who got outed or something like that via his browser history.

Firefox 3.5, due… anytime soon now, includes private browsing. I’ve been testing it on the latest Afrikaans beta ‘Begin privaat blaai’ and it works like a charm.
