It's 2008 and we are STILL worried about bandwidth in SA. AS Homer would say, "For Shame!".

But seriously, WTF is going on with our telecoms policy? Are we doomed to live without broadband (i.e. uncapped and about triple current speeds) forever. I'll be a friggin grandpa before Ivy and co get off their FA's and do something.

Well I think illegal is an interesting point of view here. If I can watch a show on Hulu.com then why is it illegal for me to download the same show from Bitorrent?

Ultimately it's not the same as a movie or music since I wasn't actually going to pay anything to watch that show anyway. Odd that it's considered piracy when it's "free" to start off with anyway.

Thanks Henk for this post. I am also a large consumer of online video content as I also don’t own a TV (and haven’t had one for over 4 years now)
Some suggestions / thoughts:

1) An alternative to P2P are streamed videos from Chinese server. Watch pretty much anything on demand and for free though http://www.surfthechannel.com/ or http://tvshack.net/

2) Hulu.com is what online TV will be like in the years to come. Hulu is an online video on demand service offering streaming video of TV shows and movies, primarily from NBC and FOX and their cable networks. Hulu videos are currently offered only to users in the United States but there are ways to bypass this restriction for South African

3) Did you know that in France, the majority of people receive TV though their ADSL line? That’s what happens when bandwidth is unlimited. (True story: My French grand ma’ who is 83 connects though a 100MB/s fibre cable, she upgraded form dial up last month!)

Once again … what is slowing down the consumption of online content in SA is the lack of cheap/unlimited bandwidth.
