Loved this Jarred, I guess largely because you write so well. I agree with what you say, but in part there is something else. I would call it a search for meaning in a way. (Yes. Believe it or not.) Just think of what Henry David Thoreau wrote in his epic non-fiction work, "Walden": "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation." I think some of the mass of minutiae is less about narcissism and more about this sad truth. That and the terrible need to be liked. Strange creatures we human beings are.
